Top Things to See in Chicago

chicago vacation

Chicago is a great weekend destination and there’s so much to see in and around the city. It was a hard job to choose what we think are the best places to visit, but eventually, we chose ten of the best places to visit in Chicago.

The Magnificent Mile

The magnificent mile is one of Chicago’s most popular attractions. It has hotels, restaurants, things to do, and an amazing atmosphere to soak in.

A good place to start is to take a ride on the magnificent Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier where you can see the surroundings from one thousand feet in the air. Get your bearings and an overview before you start to explore the Magnificent Mile.

The Magnificent Mile runs from the Chicago River to Oak Street. The area was redeveloped just after the Great Depression and War by Arthur Rubloff and William Zeckendorf who purchased the area and constructed a plan to renovate the best older buildings and to build spectacular new ones as well. It was such an extraordinary plan that it was naturally referred to as the Magnificent Mile

People come from all over the world to walk the famous strip with its diverse range of businesses and attractions. Stores like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Chanel, and Burberry mix with diverse eateries ranging from Donus Stores to upscale dining. There are several attractions in the area as well, such as Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, and the IMAX Theater. The Magnificent Mile is a wonderful place to spend the day.

Navy Pier

Navy Pier is the “People’s Pier” a true treasure that sits on Chicago’s waterfront. The atmosphere of the place is something special and unlike anywhere else in Chicago. They also run partnerships and programs that showcase Chicago’s culture and treasures. Navy Pier is a Not for Profit and it exists to serve the community.

Amazingly, it is one of the most visited destinations in the world. It was reopened in 1995 and between then and 2016 it attracted over 9.3 million guests. Originally the pier was built for shipping and recreation it has become a premier entertainment and exhibition venue. Daniel Burnham set the plan in motion in the early years of the 20th century.

“The lakefront by right belongs to the people… it should be made so alluring that it will become the fixed habit of the people to seek its restful presence at every opportunity.”

Navy pier has undoubtedly achieved this dream and between 1916 and 1941 it became a major commercial and cultural success on the lakefront drawing 3.2 million people for live bands, musical acts, concerts plays and so much more. it also served as a pier for package freighters and excursion boats until the arrival of the Great Depression.

From 1942 to 1965 the pier had two major tenants, the US Navy and the University of Illinois. These tenants kept the structure alive during and after the war. When the University moved out, once again the structure was at risk, and the original plan needed to be revised.

From 1990 to 2011 the Pier is reborn as a cultural and commercial center, with the removal of the old shipping facilities. No longer is the pier a place for shipping it is now a destination in its own right.

The final renovation in 2011 modernized the format and added much more green space, making it an attractive destination once more serving the people of Chicago.
