Steps to Reduce Jet Lag

Reduce Jet Lag

It seems like lag often comes along with taking a long journey across time zones. Somewhere in the math, there is an equation for it. I have been traveling for over three weeks and jet lag has set in. Let me explain.

Once I get into a longer flight it is as if I’ve taken a five hour train ride instead of hopping on a plane. As I approach my destination I find myself relaxed but yet unsure of where I am going and what to do. Sometimes I wonder if I have actually volunteered (or at least helped) to fly the plane instead of driving cross-country. How many people actually do this? Well, a friend of mine did, and his flight was delayed two nights by a long plane ride. Now he is trying to figure out how to best adjust.

I’m not suggesting here that you fly cross-country, only slightly. You want to adjust, first and foremost, to the number of hours that you’ve commit to your flight. Here are some things to consider. I’ll start with the schedule change- in this case, two nights.

o If you are traveling a northern route, change to a nighttime flight or two. You’ll thank me when you are two nights later contemplating sleeping in a cement mixed coffin instead of bed.

o If you are traveling a southern route, stay open this two days before taking a long plane ride.Try to modify your flight in the same way.

o Don’t drink the night before the flight. Sure I fly anyway, but drinking before the plane ride is distractions. You are relaxing and the last thing I want is to have to deal with airports, passport control, customs, passport clerks, U.S. marshals, passport photographers, etc.

o Don’t wear anything tight or fast- drying clothes. They don’t dry in the air. You can always go wash them in the next shower.

o Fast-drying clothes: Pyopy the fabric until it is as flat as possible. We’ll take a look in a moment.

o Open up the hood and remove and hang up a couple of shirts. You’ll need toppers for underwear and socks. Hang them up on a hanger overnight.

o Place a towel on the bathroom counter. You don’t need to worry about making it perfect, as you will be able to smooth out the wrinkles.

o Place a glass of white vinegar on the counter and pouring over the clothing. You’ll get a nice glow to it.

o Using the above wrinkle-free method, don’t forget to hang up the light sweater the other day. You look classy and stylish as you are taking a rest in your room.

Well, hopefully this prepares you for your ultimate vacation as you head to the wonderful world of Hawaii.

Remember to pack a swimsuit or a sarong. They don’t take up much room in your suitcase, but are essential in Hawaii. They are also good remnants of your exotic island getaway.

Also, try not to take up too much space in your suitcase. You’ll come back with more clothes than you took with you. Give yourself and your family a break by placing everything in a suitcase and rolling it up as soon as you get to your destination.
